Live-attenuated, oral poliomyelitis vaccine (Sabin) types 1, 2 & 3 (bOPV)
Indications/Uses
Active immunization against poliomyelitis type 1, 2 & 3.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Oral 1 dose is equiv to 2 drops (0.1 mL). Infant Primary vaccination Non-endemic areas 1st dose can be given from 6 wk w/ 1st dose of DTP & simultaneously w/ inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) at 2nd dose of bOPV. Endemic areas Min of 3 doses at min intervals of 4 wk administered at birth, 6, 10, 14 wk.
Contraindications
Primary immune deficiency disease or suppressed immune response from medication, leukemia, lymphoma, or generalized malignancy.
Special Precautions
Dose is not counted in case of diarrhea (repeat after recovery).
Adverse Reactions
Very rarely, there may be vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (1 case per 1 million doses administered).
